Business Decision Modelling with DMN and Drools

Business Decision Modelling with DMN and Drools

Learn how to identify, model, test and execute operational business decisions using Decision Model and Notation, DMN, and Drools. This three-day course shows how business decisions can be separated from process flows and application code, making decision logic more transparent, maintainable and accessible to both business and technical stakeholders. Participants learn how to create Decision Requirements Diagrams, design decision tables, write FEEL expressions and organise decision logic into reusable decision services. They also explore model testing, governance, versioning, collaboration and the execution of DMN models through the Drools DMN engine. The course concludes with an introduction to integrating decisions into BPMN processes and applications.

What will you learn?

You will learn how to translate policies, calculations and operational rules into clear and executable DMN models. You will model decision dependencies, create decision tables, apply FEEL expressions, test decision outcomes and integrate completed models into applications using Drools.

• Separate business decisions from process logic and application code

• Identify suitable use cases for decision modelling and rule automation

• Create Decision Requirements Diagrams and reusable decision services

• Design decision tables with appropriate hit policies

• Define calculations and decision logic using FEEL

• Validate and test decision models against business scenarios

• Manage decision ownership, governance and model versions

• Support collaboration between analysts, subject-matter experts and developers

• Execute DMN models through the Drools DMN engine

• Understand how DMN decisions can be invoked from BPMN processes

Requirements:

• Basic understanding of business processes, policies or operational rules

• Familiarity with structured data, tables or logical expressions

• No previous experience with DMN or Drools is required

• Basic Java and Maven knowledge is recommended for the technical integration sections

• Familiarity with BPMN is beneficial but not required
